only getting 3g inside office building sprint

If I have an iPhone 3GS, will the WiFi stay active at all times (when I have access), even if I don't have an AT&T cell signal, or does it go to sleep? Basically, if someone cannot reach me by calling, I want them to be able to send me an IM through something like BeeJiveIM. I doubt I will get an AT&T cell signal in my office. I have a 1st Gen iPod Touch, but WiFi goes to sleep after a short period.I need a way for people to reach me whether I'm at work, home, or on the road.In my work office, I do not get a Sprint cell signal, but I do have WiFi access (on laptop M610 does not have Wifi).My Sprint contract is up and I am considering ditching my Samsung M610 and jumping to AT&T for a 16GB 3GS. Before I was about to switch to something else (probably AT&T because I have an unlocked phone from England).First post, so I'll keep it short. Since getting a new phone I'm really happy with it thanks to the WIFI calling. In nearby cities (not rural areas where I work), the service is great and the LTE is fast (like being at home on wifi). Then I got a Wifi-calling phone and the service through that is great (duh, it's wifi). People can't hear me, and I can't understand them when making calls. I had Red Pocket (an AT&T MVNO) for a month and the service was great for the most part, but I decided I wanted to get on a monthly plan rather than PAYG, and T-mobile made sense for traveling back to Europeland with their international roaming (which, BTW, works great and is worth having). When I was first here I was unsure to go with T-Mobile because of the issues of building penetration and coverage. I moved back to the US from England this last summer and over there the population density and actual competition meant I had a phone signal (EE/T-Mobile) almost all of the time even in 'rural' areas. Those two purchases are the best I've made in a very, very long time.

The only other purchase I can think of that was perfect for me was getting a Roku 3. The added bonus of paying $30-50 LESS than the other two for equivalent voice and vastly superior data is the deal of the century for me. As far as I'm concerned their data is the top of the line, and their voice is good enough because I get coverage everywhere I go.

I always had connection, but it was stuttery and slow more than it was decent. When I bought a PAYG sim on AT&T the data connection was very up and down. AT&T on the same unlocked phone as gotten me about 12-15mbps at the highest. I get well over 30mbps consistently on LTE and it's rock solid. As far as their data speeds go, they aren't lying. Their service isn't great outside of cities, in fact it doesn't work very much at all, but since I spend 99% of my time inside the metro area they have great service. I get good enough service to have voice and data everywhere except that one building. How you turn off 4G service can vary by carrier and phone model. Turn off your LTE service to see if you can get a better connection and improved coverage by using the 3G network. In my experience in Atlanta I've only had bad signal penetration in one building I've been in so far. and Canada are still covered primarily by 3G cell service.
